Abbot and Mayhew – Discourses on American Responsibility

“Abiel Abbot’s Discourse on American Independence” and “Jonathan Mayhew’s Discourse Concerning Unlimited Submission” have been posted under the Resource Downloads link. Both of these are informational handouts designed to educate and inform about the relationship between people and government. Take a look at what these early American thinkers thought – and sometimes spoke prophetically – about the law, tyranny, and the role of Christianity in our nation. You might even find a laugh or two in there, such as when Jonathan Mayhew states “If people find themselves greatly abused and oppressed by their governors, they must be stupid not to complain.” Also, there is some sidebar information on Voltaire and Weishaupt – two enlightenment thinkers who were seen as a threat to early American Independence.
