Rising crime and low property values in St. Joseph, Mo

From a friend in the liberty movement here in Missouri, we’ve just been made aware of an opportunity to for those of you in Northwest Missouri to speak up. According to the agenda (see below) of the upcoming April 16 meeting (Monday at 7pm), there will be a hearing concerning the supply of more Federal Tax Dollars to move even more low income people into the City of St. Joseph. The majority of these low income people have qualified for Vouchers that allow them to live/rent paid by HUD in our local neighborhoods. The City of St. Joseph over the past 2 years has had a crime rate raise 300%. This type of housing does not help the people that are brought in as the city does not have the type of job base that encourage these low income people to get jobs that would pay them to support themselves. The HUD and other programs have brought in a higher crime rate, drug dealings (note drug bust at 2617 and 2615 Seneca this past week). Please attend and learn how this well intentioned program has unintended consequences that affects all of us here in St. Joseph, MO. Our property values have dropped, our crime rates have risen. Please take the time to be an interested citizen. We can certainly find better ways to help our local citizens who need help.

The City Council of the City of St. Joseph will hold a public hearing on Monday, April 16, 2012, at 7:00 p.m., in the Council Chamber at City Hall, on the Third Year Annual Plan for the use of any Community Development Block Grant and HOME Investment Partnership funds the City may receive in Fiscal Year 2012/2013. These federal funds are intended to principally address the economic, housing and non-housing needs of low- and moderate-income residents and the areas in which they live. The City of St. Joseph receives these funds through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The City of St. Joseph has received notice of the City’s entitlement and prepared a projected budget. (See the entire agenda PDF)

If you are unable to attend the April 16 meeting, please consider contacting the following city officials, and letting them know why you do not support supplying more Federal Tax Dollars to move even more low income people into the City of St. Joseph. (Entire list here)
